We caught up with Jessica Sullivan and talked a little about her job, her dreams, and what she has been up to.
How did you get into Photography?
I spent my freshman year of college in Pullmanat Washington State University. I loved the small town and the school but it just wasn’t home. I missed the beach every day and literally dreamt of the landscapes of home. Something that helped me with my homesickness was making inspiration boards on Pinterest with photos of home that I found online. I never thought anything of it until I decided to move home after my freshman year and picked up a camera at a job that I got as a tourist photographer in Waikiki. I realized that all my time spent in cold, snowy weather, I was just building up inspiration for what would soon be my passion. Once I started playing with the camera at my job, I started to take photos of my friends, and then I started reaching out to models, and then companies!
What is your favorite thing to shoot?
I love shooting fashion! Something about the way so many different forms of art are combined together in a fashion shoot just makes me so happy and satisfied. There’s the art of fashion design shown through the clothing that’s worn, the art of hair and makeup, and the art of photography are all combined into one big piece of artwork put together by a group of people bringing an idea to life.
What are you most excited for this year? Personally, professionally or both?
I just recently moved to Pupukea (North Shore) and that’s a huge change for my life because I always lived on the East side in Hawai’i Kai. That’s probably what I’m most excited about personally and professionally! Coming up here always cleared my mind and helped me to relax a lot so moving here just felt right and was just what I needed to stop stressing about every little thing in life. Plus I do a lot of my work out here on the north shore anyway so it really all worked out perfectly. My boyfriend and I moved here on such a whim but now that we’re settled in it has been so amazing and I can’t wait for what the rest of the year here holds for me.
Do you get to travel for work? Where is your favorite place it has taken you?
The farthest I’ve gone for work was to the Big Island! I went for a weekend with some friends to shoot bikinis for a company we were all working for at the time and it was honestly one of the best weekends of my life! I have a couple trips planned for work coming up in the next few months and I hope to plan even more for the future!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years, Any big plans?
I see myself being better version of who I am today! I’m young so I still have a lot of learning and growing to do but I just want to go with the flow of where life takes me and continue to pursue my passion of photography professionally and just keep blooming!
Smart, beautiful, and talented, the 21-year-old from the East side of Oahu has a lot in store for her.
